Our Days as a Trade in UK [Complete with a Sea Shanty]

There are few professions where the working day starts quite as early as it does in construction. Long before customers unlock the front door or office staff arrive for work, decorators, flooring installers, fit-out contractors and builders are already loading vans, checking materials and making sure nothing has been forgotten.

By seven o'clock, thousands of trade vans are already travelling Britain's roads carrying everything needed for the day ahead. Most customers never see this part of the job, yet experienced contractors know it is often the most important. A forgotten roll of tape, an underestimated quantity of floor protection or an unnecessary emergency delivery can quietly turn a profitable project into an expensive one.

That daily routine inspired us to write a small sea shanty. It's light-hearted, but every contractor will probably recognise at least one verse.

The Tradesman's Morning

The Correx Shanty

At half past six we load the van,
With Correx boards and a careful plan.
Tape and trims all stacked up neat,
Tea in hand and off the street.

Heave away, lads, tape her down,
From London Bridge to Glasgow town.
Make it tidy, make it right,
Earn your wage before the night!

The first verse captures something every tradesperson understands. The day's success has usually been decided before anyone reaches site. Preparation is one of the least glamorous parts of construction, but it is also one of the most valuable. Good contractors don't simply pack tools; they think through the entire workflow, ensuring they have enough temporary floor protection, the correct tapes for different surfaces, spare blades and enough consumables to deal with the unexpected.

A well-stocked van is about far more than convenience. It reduces unnecessary journeys, keeps projects moving and allows teams to respond when customers inevitably ask for "just one more room."

If you're planning a decorating or refurbishment project yourself, our guide to How Many Correx Boards Do I Need? explains how to estimate board quantities accurately while allowing for overlaps and waste. Read more here

Protecting a Site

One of the habits that separates experienced contractors from newcomers is understanding that protecting a site is the first stage of the build, not something that happens afterwards. Timber flooring, porcelain tiles, finished joinery and newly decorated surfaces are all vulnerable while other trades continue working, which is why Correx® has become such a common sight on construction sites throughout the UK.

According to Corplex, the original manufacturer of Correx®, twin-wall polypropylene offers an excellent combination of durability, impact resistance and moisture resistance, making it well suited to temporary floor protection during construction and refurbishment.

Protecting completed work also supports safer working environments. The Health and Safety Executive identifies slips and trips as one of the leading causes of workplace injuries, making securely taped floor protection an important part of good site management as well as good workmanship.

Then the Job Changes

Every contractor has experienced the same conversation.

The customer walks through the property and says,

"Would you mind doing the hallway while you're here?"

Most professionals are happy to help, but every additional room changes the day's calculations. Suddenly there are more floors to protect, more tape required and another hour added to the programme.

That's exactly why the second verse exists.

The Correx Shanty

The client says, "Just one more room..."
The tape runs out, and profits bloom... (or rather don't!)
Retail prices, express delivery—
There goes Friday's brewery!

Heave away, lads, tape her down,
Don't let margins slowly drown.
Buy it once and plan the day,
More of what you earn can stay!

Every contractor smiles because they've lived this.

Running out of tape is never really about the cost of another roll. The real expense comes from everything that follows. Somebody has to leave site, fuel is burned driving to the nearest builders' merchant, productivity slows while the team waits and an urgent delivery suddenly becomes unavoidable. By the time work resumes, the cheapest consumable on the invoice has become one of the most expensive decisions of the day.

Thinking about temporary floor protection as a complete system rather than individual products helps avoid these interruptions. Correx boards, cloth tape, masking tape and protection film all have different roles to play, and ordering them together is usually both cheaper and more efficient than buying them piecemeal.

If you're unsure which tape is best for joining Correx, protecting freshly painted skirting boards or working on delicate finishes, our guide explains the purpose of each tape used on UK construction sites.

Expect Unexpected Challenges

Construction is full of challenges that nobody can control. The weather changes, deliveries arrive late and customers alter specifications. Those are simply part of the job. What experienced contractors can control is preparation. Estimating the correct number of boards, choosing the right tape, allowing for waste and organising deliveries properly all contribute to smoother projects and healthier profit margins.

A Sea Shanty About our Days

The sea shanty may have been written for fun, but it captures something every experienced contractor understands. Construction has never been simply about working hard. Every successful business works hard. The businesses that consistently make money are the ones that plan effectively, arrive prepared and avoid the small mistakes that quietly consume profit throughout the week.

Sometimes the smallest items in the van make the biggest difference.

Oh... And the sea shanty? Listen to it here
