Best Floor Protection for Wooden Floors During Renovation

Wooden floors can be among the most expensive surfaces to damage during a renovation. A dropped tool, trapped piece of grit or unsuitable adhesive can leave marks that are difficult and costly to repair.

For builders, decorators and refurbishment contractors, choosing the right floor protection starts with understanding the floor itself.

Is it solid wood or engineered timber? Is the finish fully cured? Will the room be used for light decorating, or will several trades be moving equipment through it?

The answers determine whether protective cardboard, Correx or another specialist protection system is appropriate.

What Is the Best Protection for Wooden Floors During Building Work?

For established, fully cured wooden floors, a suitable non-adhesive temporary protection system may be a sensible starting point.

Protective cardboard can be useful for general decorating and light refurbishment, where the main risks are dust, minor paint spills and normal foot traffic.

For more demanding work, a fluted polypropylene board such as Correx may provide a more substantial physical barrier. However, the suitability of any covering depends on the floor finish, moisture conditions and the expected site activity.

Newly installed or recently refinished wooden floors require particular care. Some finishes and adhesives need time to cure, and covering them too early can interfere with that process.

The flooring manufacturer's instructions should always take priority.

Can You Put Cardboard Directly on Wooden Floors?

Protective cardboard is commonly used during decorating and refurbishment, but that doesn't mean every cardboard product is suitable for every wooden floor.

Ordinary untreated cardboard may absorb moisture and weaken when wet. Purpose-designed floor protection cardboard can offer additional properties such as spill resistance and breathability.

TI-Pro 260gsm protective cardboard uses Spillux Technology, intended to provide temporary resistance to spills while permitting moisture vapour movement.

Before laying it, ensure the wooden floor is clean and free from grit. Confirm that the finish is suitable for covering and follow any requirements concerning curing, moisture and installation.

Avoid allowing wet or contaminated protection to remain against the floor.

For help selecting the right material, see our guide to cardboard floor protection GSM.

Is Correx Suitable for Protecting Wooden Floors?

Correx is a lightweight, fluted polypropylene board that can create a physical barrier between construction activity and a finished surface.

It can be worth considering when there is more movement of materials, tools or equipment than on a straightforward decorating job.

Trades International supplies TI-Pro 2mm Correx sheets measuring 2400 × 1200mm, with each sheet covering 2.88m².

However, Correx is water resistant and relatively impermeable. That may be useful when dealing with spills from above, but it also means moisture conditions beneath the covering need careful consideration.

Do not install it directly over newly finished timber or moisture-sensitive flooring without confirming that the system is suitable.

See our TI-Pro Correx protection boards and Correx versus protective cardboard guide.

Can You Use Adhesive Floor Protection Film on Wood?

Only where the particular floor and film are confirmed to be compatible.

A hard-floor protection film may be suitable for certain established, fully cured surfaces, but different wood finishes can respond differently to adhesives.

A recently oiled, lacquered, sealed or refinished floor may have requirements that make adhesive film inappropriate.

There is also a difference between hard-floor film and carpet film. Carpet protection film typically has different adhesive characteristics and should not be treated as a substitute.

Before applying any film, check the flooring manufacturer's instructions, the protection film's technical information and the permitted application period.

Our guide to adhesive floor protection on hard floors explains the main considerations.

How Do You Protect a Wooden Floor During Renovation?

Begin by inspecting the floor and identifying any existing damage. Photograph the condition before work starts, particularly on expensive floors or projects involving several contractors.

Next, confirm whether the floor is fully cured and suitable for temporary covering. Remove grit and debris carefully, using cleaning methods approved for the finish.

Choose protection based on the work taking place. Ordinary decorating may require a different system from a project involving heavy materials or equipment.

Lay the covering according to the product manufacturer's instructions. Secure joints and edges using methods that do not damage the finish, and avoid applying tape directly to the timber unless expressly approved.

Inspect the protection during the job. Replace damaged or contaminated sections, remove trapped grit where safe to do so and prevent liquids from remaining against the surface.

Finally, remove the covering carefully and inspect the floor before handing the property back to the customer.

How Do You Protect Newly Finished Wooden Floors?

Newly finished timber is a special case because the floor may still be curing or releasing moisture.

The correct waiting period depends on the flooring material, adhesive, coating and environmental conditions. There is no single safe number of hours or days that applies to every wooden floor.

Ask the flooring installer or manufacturer when the surface can be covered, which protection materials are approved and whether moisture vapour needs to escape.

Do not assume that a breathable product automatically makes early covering safe.

Where there is uncertainty, delay covering the floor or use a protection method specifically approved for that flooring system.

What About Engineered Wood and Laminate?

Engineered wood and laminate should not automatically be treated as identical to solid timber.

Their construction, surface finishes and moisture tolerances can differ. Some may be particularly sensitive to trapped moisture, swelling or unsuitable adhesives.

Check the flooring manufacturer's installation and care guidance before choosing a temporary protection product.

The same principle applies to underfloor heating, where temperature and moisture conditions may influence what coverings are suitable.

How Much Does It Cost to Protect a Wooden Floor?

The cost depends on the area, protection material and cutting allowance.

For example, a 50m² floor requires 18 full-size TI-Pro Correx sheets before waste, or 20 sheets with a 10% allowance.

At an illustrative starting price of £1.75 per sheet, 20 sheets have a theoretical material cost of £35 excluding VAT. Actual purchase costs depend on available pack quantities.

A 50m² TI-Pro cardboard roll is advertised from £21.60 excluding VAT, although additional material may be required for overlaps and cutting.

These are material-cost comparisons, not proof that either product is suitable for a particular wooden floor.

For a more detailed comparison, read How Much Does It Cost to Protect 100m² of Flooring?.

What Should Builders Use to Protect Expensive Wooden Floors?

The most important consideration is the consequence of damage.

A high-value timber floor may justify a more substantial, specialist protection system, particularly where equipment and multiple trades are involved.

Start with the flooring manufacturer's requirements, then assess traffic, impact, spills, duration and moisture conditions.

Trades International supplies TI-Pro cardboard and Correx protection materials for suitable renovation applications.

Choosing the correct protection is usually far less expensive than repairing a damaged floor, but the material must be appropriate for the surface and the work being carried out.
